Understand your boat’s finish

Oxidation removal FAQs

A dull or chalky finish can be confusing. Here’s how we assess oxidation and help you choose an appropriate correction and protection package.

What causes oxidation on a boat?

Over time, sunlight and exposure to the elements weather the gelcoat surface. It can lose gloss, fade and develop a chalky appearance. Salt and dirt buildup can also dull the finish, so we clean and assess the surface before recommending correction.

How can I tell whether my boat has oxidation?

Common signs include a faded color, uneven gloss or a chalky residue on the surface. Water spots, contamination and failing coatings can look similar. Photos help us start the conversation; an inspection or test spot helps confirm what the finish needs.

Can heavy oxidation be corrected, or is it permanent?

Oxidized gelcoat can often be improved with compounding and polishing. Some surfaces need a more involved process, including sanding where suitable. Results depend on the condition and remaining usable finish. Cracks, exposed fiberglass or a worn-through finish may need repair or refinishing rather than detailing. We discuss these limitations before you approve the work.

Will washing or applying wax remove oxidation?

A regular wash removes dirt, salt and surface buildup; it is not a machine correction service. Wax or ceramic protection alone does not replace the correction needed for a chalky finish. Cleaner-wax products may address light oxidation, but the right process depends on the surface and desired result.

Do I need Revive or Restore?

Start with Aqualux Revive for polishing or heavy cutting and polishing on agreed surfaces. Aqualux Restore offers a different correction process, with sanding included in Levels 2–3 where suitable. The packages overlap in some situations, so we use the surface assessment—not just boat age—to recommend an option.

Does every oxidized boat need sanding?

No. Compounding and polishing may provide the improvement needed without sanding. Sanding is considered only when the finish and condition make it appropriate. Painted surfaces and existing coatings require their own assessment.

How long will the finish last afterward?

There is no single lifespan for a corrected finish. Sun exposure, storage, use, finish condition, the selected protection and ongoing maintenance all affect it. We explain the care and expected maintenance for the specific wax, sealant, ceramic spray or dedicated coating in your estimate rather than promise one duration for every boat.

Can oxidation come back after correction or ceramic coating?

Yes. Correction improves the current finish; it does not make the surface immune to weathering. Suitable protection and regular care help maintain the result. A dedicated ceramic coating still needs maintenance, and ceramic spray in a detail package is a separate type of service.

How should I care for the boat after oxidation removal?

Rinse away salt after use where practical, arrange regular washing, and use care products appropriate to your finish and protection. Follow the product-specific washing and cure guidance we provide. Contact us when gloss changes or buildup appears so we can assess it before recommending more correction.

Do you come to my boat?

Yes. Aqualux provides mobile marine detailing in Ventura, Channel Islands and Santa Barbara. Tell us your marina or storage location so we can confirm access, scheduling and whether the requested work can be completed there. Haul-out and specialty access are separate where needed.

Know what you’re choosing

Boat detailing, explained simply.

Cleaning vs. correction

A wash removes dirt and surface buildup. Polishing and cutting are separate machine processes for improving the finish. Non-skid cleaning is included as listed; non-skid correction and protection are quoted separately.

Polishing vs. heavy cutting

Polishing refines the finish and enhances gloss. Heavy cutting is the stronger correction step listed in selected Revive packages, followed by polishing. We assess which process is suitable for your surface.

Wax, ceramic spray or coating?

Premium wax and ceramic spray are protection finishes included in selected packages. A dedicated ceramic coating is a separate, custom-quoted service with its own preparation and coverage. “Ceramic spray” does not mean a dedicated ceramic coating.

Common questions before booking

Does “per foot” cover my whole boat?

Length is the basis for the starting rate. Your written estimate states whether correction and protection cover hull sides, topsides, or both. Boat layout, surface condition and access affect final pricing. Ask us to confirm coverage before comparing totals.

Are stainless, windows and compartments included?

Preserve, Revive and Restore include accessible exterior stainless hand polishing and protection, exterior glass care, rust-stain treatment where safely achievable, exterior seating care, and accessible storage compartments as listed. Wash packages have their own inclusions—expand the package to compare.

Do I need the highest level?

Choose the result you want, rather than the most expensive option. We can assess photos, inspect the finish or perform a test spot to recommend an appropriate process. Age and visible fading alone do not tell us which level will be suitable.

What if I have paint or an existing coating?

Tell us the finish type and any known coating history. The process is tailored to the surface; a sanding or heavy-cut option is not automatically suitable for every painted or coated boat.

What happens after the detail?

Ask us about recurring washing and care appropriate to your selected protection. We’ll recommend a maintenance approach based on your vessel and use. Detailing does not replace ongoing cleaning.
